Size and Fitting Guide

Choosing the perfect rug can be tricky. Here, our design experts share their knowledge of rug sizing and placement so you can focus on the fun part - selecting the perfect color, pattern and style.

POSITIONING AND BALANCE

The size of a room doesn't necessarily determine the size of a rug. Instead, think about where the furniture is positioned. A well-proportioned rug will unify separate elements and pull the room together. Rugs can also be used to create balance in a less symmetrical space and to zone open plan areas. Ask our experts for advice.

SIZE AND COMFORT

Our rugs are wonderful to walk on, so for the full underfoot experience and to maximize comfort, make sure there is a generous amount of rug around the edges of a bed or to the edges of a corridor for example.

BORDERS AND PATTERNS

Rugs with borders tend to have a more traditional feel and can help to define a space. Conversely, patterns that run to the edge of a rug look more contemporary and can make a room feel larger and more relaxed.

STANDARD AND CUSTOM RUG SIZES

We stock several standard rug sizes in regular, runners and round sizes. Need a specific size or shape? Discover our custom and bespoke service here.

Size Guide - Living Room A

LIVING ROOM A

If budget permits, a living room rug should be generous enough so that the furniture sits comfortably within its perimeter. This will pull the room together and make it feel more cohesive. If a rug is too small, it may appear lost and the space can feel disjointed.

Size Guide - Living Room B

LIVING ROOM B

It's possible to visually expand a smaller room by placing a rug so its edges sit halfway under the furniture. This works well with contemporary rugs that have no border, where the pattern runs right to the edge.

Size Guide - Living Room C

LIVING ROOM C

To make an independent feature of a rug, ensure its edges are slightly longer and wider than the dimensions of the furniture that it sits next to. This will make the space feel inviting, whilst creating equilibrium.

Size Guide - Living Room D

LIVING ROOM D

An L-shaped sofa faces in two directions, so make sure a rug sits comfortably under both sections and aligns in the same way at each end. Ideally the sofa should sit completely within the edges of the rug, or at least halfway under the L-shape. A small rug inside the L can appear stingy and may leave the sofa looking isolated.

BEDROOM A

In a bedroom, position the rug underneath the bed, in front of bedside tables and perpendicular to the bed frame. This allows for a soft layer to step out on to when you get up. For balance, aim to frame the end of the bed with an equal amount of rug.

Bedside runners are another solution in a bedroom. If you opt for a pair of rugs, make sure they're at least as wide as the bedside tables and as long as the bed.

Size Guide - Bedroom C

An alternative option in a bedroom is to place a rug at a right angle to the frame at the end of the bed. This works well if you're using a smaller piece.

Hallways and runners

HALLWAYS AND RUNNERS

In a hallway, it's often best to order a custom length runner to fit the space so there's a precise start and finish point. Runners can also help zone walkways in open plan areas and can be used to brighten hallways that are lacking light.

Dining Room & Custom Shapes

DINING ROOM

Under a dining table, a rug should be large enough so that you can pull a chair out without the back legs getting caught on the rug's edge. We recommend a size at least 5ft wider than the length and width of the table.

Size Guide - Round Rug in a Dining Room

DINING ROOM CIRCULAR

Custom designs often work well under round tables. As with a square or rectangular, we suggest allowing a depth of at least 5ft of extra rug coverage around the edge.

Size Guide - Dining Room - Custom Shape

CUSTOM SHAPES

If you have an unusually shaped sofa, a bespoke piece of furniture or an odd-shaped room, a custom rug can be used to make a great feature of it. Our design experts can create a rug in any dimension to enhance specific elements.

STAIRS

The construction and style of stairs vary greatly, so with this in mind we approach each project individually. Our team can advise on exactly what type of made-to-measure floor covering will work best for your staircase.
