About this Design
Designer story
The champion of eclectic British fashion Paul Smith describes his unique and much-coveted style as ‘classic with a twist’.
He has the unique ability to anticipate, and even spark off trends not only in fashion but in the wider context of popular culture. His creations are infused with a genuine sense of humour and mischief which is beautifully married with his love of tradition and the classics; his unmistakable Englishness is augmented by the unexpected and the eccentric.
Paul Smith was invited by Christopher and Suzanne Sharp to bring his inspirational and powerful designs to The Rug Company as one of the first fashion designers to join the Designer Collection. Paul Smith’s confident, bright rug designs can transform a room. They are an extension of his clothes designs, and many have enjoyed such perennial success that they have become undoubted icons of design. Paul Smith extended his collection for The Rug Company with sophisticated yet playful hand-woven wallhangings and cushions. Each creation encapsulates his classically English inspiration imbued with a unique Paul Smith aesthetic, as he puts it, ‘classic with a twist’.
“I met the owners of The Rug Company at Westbourne House, my Notting Hill shop. We started to talk and they asked if I would be interested in designing a collection of rugs. I very much enjoyed talking to them and having had the opportunity to visit them in their shop, I knew immediately that we could work together. My designs have been a progression of my clothes, shirts and knitwear. My rugs are strong in pattern and form. They fit into today’s interiors adding fun and colour.” Sir Paul Smith
Craftsmanship
This rug is entirely handmade, from the spinning of the yarns to the weaving on the loom. It is unique, and has been crafted by weavers in the Kathmandu area, whose skills have been passed down through many generations. We use only the finest natural yarns; the Tibetan wool is renowned for its softness and durability, while the fine silk brings a delicate lustre that enhances the design of the rug. To this we have added the vision of a world class designer, and the result is a hand knotted contemporary rug of extraordinary beauty which will itself become an heirloom to be treasured for years to come.
