  • About This Design

Originally taken from an old station clock found in a salvage yard 25 years ago, the clock design was first translated into a limited edition rug in 1985, with the hands set at 8 and 5 to signify the date. Now, on the 30th anniversary of the design company Timney Fowler, The Rug Company has recreated this iconic design as a hand knotted rug, with the hands set at 2 and 10 to signify 2010. Thanks to its simple and classic design, the Clock continues to be as relevant and strong today as it was in the 1980’s.

Sue says of the Clock design, ‘It’s a bit like the Union Jack flag, steeped in tradition and unmistakably British.’

The Clock rug is hand knotted in Tibetan wool and is available exclusively from The Rug Company showrooms worldwide in the following sizes only:

    • 2.13m x 2.13m (7' x 7')
    • 2.44m x 2.44m (8' x 8')
    • 2.74m x 2.74m (9' x 9')
  • Designer Story

Self-confessed mistress of monochrome Sue Timney is renowned for her distinctive use of black and white graphic imagery.

As co-founder of Timney Fowler, Sue was one of the first to bridge the gap between fashion and interiors during the 1980s, later known as the ‘lifestyle’ trend. Today, the two colours (sometimes offset with bright primaries) remain an essential part of her design identity.

Timney left the Royal College of Art in 1979 after which she formed Timney-Fowler with Grahame Fowler. The pair went on to collaborate with designers such as Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Ralph Lauren and Diane von Furstenberg, producing fashion and fabric concepts for their labels, as well as developing several Timney-Fowler clothing licenses for work sold around the world. Sue Timney had a retrospective Exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum London in November 2010 representing 30 years work from 1980 – 2010. The exhibition featured Sue Timney’s Clock rug from The Rug Company.

  • Craftsmanship

This rug is entirely handmade, from the spinning of the wool to the weaving on the loom. It is unique, and has been crafted by weavers in the Kathmandu area, whose skills have been passed down through many generations. We use only the highest quality wool for our rugs, that of the Tibetan sheep, for its durability, rich texture and subtle colour variation. To this we have added the vision of a world class designer, and the result is a hand knotted contemporary rug of extraordinary beauty, which will itself become an heirloom to be treasured for years to come.
