Designer story

Self-taught maverick of design Tom Dixon made his name creating innovative designs inspired by the unique heritage of British industry.

Tunisian born, Dixon has lived in Britain since the age of 4. He founded the design company “Tom Dixon” in 2002 and is now regarded as a protagonist in the design firmament. Entirely committed to innovation, Dixon combines the creative with the commercial.

Tom Dixon fell into design by accident when he found himself with “time on his hands” while recovering from a motorcycle accident. He taught himself how to become a designer-maker in 1983 after discovering welding when trying to repair his motorbike. He was head of design at Habitat and continues to work as creative director of Artek, the Finnish furniture manufacturer founded by Alvar Aalto in the 1930s. His work is included in collections of the world’s leading museums, including London Design Museum, the V&A, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Moma in New York.

The Rug Company launched its collection with Tom Dixon in 2009 with a specially created pop-up tent installation at Portobello Dock, a wharf converted by Dixon into what is now a must-visit on the London design trail. The Tom Dixon rug collection encapsulates The Rug Company’s commitment to combining forward-thinking rug designs with handmade craftsmanship.

Craftsmanship

This rug is entirely handmade, from the spinning of the wool to the weaving on the loom. It is unique, and has been crafted by weavers in the Kathmandu area, whose skills have been passed down through many generations. We use only the highest quality wool for our rugs, that of the Tibetan sheep, for its durability, rich texture and subtle colour variation. To this we have added the vision of a world class designer, and the result is a hand knotted contemporary rug of extraordinary beauty, which will itself become an heirloom to be treasured for years to come.
