Umbra rug by Paul Smith wins Wallpaper* Award

“We embrace the idea of furniture that redesigns space with black shapes and optical illusion. This is perfectly exemplified by Paul Smith’s hand-knotted Tibetan wool rug for The Rug Company, whose appearance changes with shifting points of view.” So says Wallpaper* magazine of the Umbra rug, which has won an award at this year’s Wallpaper* Design Awards.

Gathering inspiration from modernist buildings, Umbra plays with the scale of a graphic art deco print to produce a strong, urban feel in striking monochrome.

Wallpaper* Editor-in-Chief Tony Chambers says, “Each month we make it our mission to sort the remarkable from the also-rans. The annual Design Awards issue is our ultimate edit”. A full list of the award winners is published in the February issue of Wallpaper*.

I absolutely love Paul Smith's monochrome rugs! May I ask whose black leather chairs are in the photo?
