Winning wallhanging dazzles in Dubai

To seek out the Middle East’s freshest creative talent, The Rug Company invited local artists and designers to take part in a competition to design an original wallhanging. The winning design, chosen by a prestigious judging panel, would then be translated from original artwork into a limited edition of 10 wallhangings, the first signed by the artist and sold at auction by Bonhams.

Judged by The Rug Company founders Christopher & Suzanne Sharp, design maverick Tom Dixon, fashion designer Matthew Williamson and the editor of Harper’s Bazaar Interiors, Rue Kothari, the competition attracted some of the region’s most passionate and diverse artists and produced a highly impressive shortlist.

However, it was Abeer Seikaly’s The Chandelier that won the acclaimed prize and has since been translated into a breathtaking needlepoint. Rooted in the process of memory, it is a work of great depth and complexity. Suzanne Sharp says of the design, “This piece really represents where the artist was coming from, her past, her culture; and simply, I thought it was very beautiful.”

Dubai’s dazzling design scene turned out to celebrate the auction of this one-off signed masterpiece, with judges Matthew Williamson, Christopher & Suzanne Sharp, and Rue Kothari attending the glamourous event. The first edition sold for Dhs90,000, with all profits donated to the Dubai Autism Centre.
