Studio visit: Committee

Creative satisfaction comes when “two objects that never knew they were meant to be together find each other,” says Clare Page, one half of the design duo Committee. Together with Harry Richardson, Committee dream up interesting and provocative objects often using junk and unwanted items found in local market stalls and skips near their studio in Deptford, south London.

The studio is filled with vintage crockery, plastic and ornamental knick-knacks, yet according to photographer Philip Sinden, “every item’s characteristics, purpose and position is carefully considered.” Committee’s love of the re-found object can be seen in their Fly Tip rug, where the pair turn a jumble of cast-offs into a beautiful object. Meanwhile, the Door rug can be attributed to their interest in sculpture and abstract forms.

Committee’s work is collected worldwide and has become a permanent fixture at London’s Design Museum’s collection.
