To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, the pair have designed a collectible ‘train’ £2 coin for The Royal Mint.
Featuring a classic and instantly recognisable Victorian Line train emerging from a tunnel, the design symbolises moving from the past into the future.
The anniversary, happening this year, will celebrate 150 years of the London Underground – the oldest underground railway in the world.
The patterned edging was inspired by engineering draftsman Harry Beck’s famous tube map design, while the outer ring of the coin is used to suggest the tunnel walls.
BarberOsgerby said of the design, “The £2 coin was the perfect choice to commemorate the tube. Its form is naturally reminiscent of the Roundel that is the universal logo of the London Underground.” See Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby’s collection for The Rug Company here.
