The Rug Company has sourced a new collection of one-off vintage Armenian rugs. Armenians are the earliest known weavers of oriental rugs, dating back to the 5th century BC. They were seen as great status symbols and renowned for their striking imagery and vivid colouration.
Historically, the deep crimson colour was achieved using a dye extracted from the bodies of dried worms!
In the 20th century, rugs became increasingly political, often emblazoned with the symbols of modern warfare.
Today, a typical Armenian rug can contain anything from cross shapes, geometric birds, floral patterns and modern landscapes.
2000 years on, Armenian rugs are still made in exactly the same way. The Rug Company collection has all sorts of patterns and sizes, contact your nearest showroom for details of what’s available.
